ABOUT
Michael Gittings makes unusual, ambitious sculptural works by hand. Based in regional Victoria, his practice spans sculpture, collectible design, public art and site-specific commissions across Australia and internationally.
Grounded in a longstanding fascination with metalworking and hands-on experimentation, Gittings combines an intuitive approach to making with a high level of technical skill and material knowledge. Drawing on traditions of sculpture, decorative arts and hand fabrication, he works directly with metal to develop distinctive forms, surfaces and finishes, often pushing familiar materials and processes in unexpected directions.
This combination of artistic experimentation and fabrication capability allows Gittings to work across scales, from sculptural objects to ambitious architectural and public works. His work has been exhibited internationally, acquired and commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria, and is held in private collections throughout Australia, the United States and Europe.
Alongside his independent practice, Gittings collaborates with architects and interior designers to develop bespoke works for specific spaces and projects, bringing his material language, technical knowledge and hands-on approach to each commission.
